Curriculum Update

Literacy- Students are in full swing in their nonfiction literacy units. In writing they are focusing energy on editing and ensuring they have used all their craft moves to teach their readers as much as they can. In reading they reading aloud to sound like experts. This involves rereading and building their fluency.

Math-Students are solving word problems with subtraction of 9 from 10 and teen numbers. They are making math drawings, number sentences, and writing statements to show their thinking. In class, students also practice math fluency through sprints and other quick math warm-ups.

Social Studies- Students have done many interviews of various community helpers at Graded over the last several weeks. They have learned so much about community helpers’ responsibilities, materials/tools, likes/dislikes, and MUCH MORE. Also, students are beginning to prepare for an oral presentation about their chosen helper. Students will teach others all about their specific helper by “acting” like them. They are very excited about this challenge!

Portuguese- Estamos finalizando nossa unidade de Cantigas e Parlendas, para refletir sobre a escrita das palavras em Português. Paralelamente, estamos escrevendo narrativas pessoais e lendo livros de ficção e de Cantigas e Parlendas.

Here are a few photos of us interviewing:

We are excited to share all we learned about the community helper we interviewed during our wax museum on Friday, December 6th at 10:45. We hope you can stop in to see us!

News from the Library
Create Bravely! Keeping the Inspiration Going!

Our students had such an amazing and inspirational time with Peter H. Reynolds, and so did many of our parents. Peter spoke at a parent coffee about how necessary the qualities he describes in his book are - things like empathy, creativity, bravery, balance, patience. He also challenged the parents there (and I pass this challenge on to all of you) to create and play WITH their children. Have a family art gallery with your work features, as well, as you model taking risks!

Peter ALSO had a wonderful, inspirational time, and sent this letter to share with all of you. If you haven't already, please take a look at the wonderful photos of his visit, with more added this week by the talented Angela Park.
